We Need Online Meetings Now More Than Ever

The NSW Labor Administrative Committee has called a sub-committee meeting to consider digital rank-and-file democracy on Thursday 14 January. The sub-committee was established in the wake of a general meeting of NSW Labor Members, which demanded online branch meetings and the restoration of party activity. While Admin's committment was a big win for rank-and-file members, Head Office is yet to commit to online democracy.

Please use this tool to send an email to NSW Labor General Secretary, Bob Nanva, calling on him to ensure that the sub-committee considers rules changes to allow party units to meet electronically via Zoom or a similar medium. We cannot allow this process to become another dead end review of democracy in our Party. By sending an email you are ensuring that the momentum for our collective campaign keeps moving forward.

I am writing to call on you to ensure that the NSW Labor Organising Recruitment and Training Sub-Committee consider a rules change to allow party units to hold meetings wholly electronically via Zoom or a similar medium.

A meeting of this sub-committee has been called for Thursday 14 January. However, it is expected to focus on the discussion of a rules change to facilitate hybrid in-person and online meetings.

It is essential that this rules change is adopted by the NSW Labor Administrative Committee at its next meeting on 5 February. However, the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in NSW has also shown that the only way to ensure that all party units can meet safely to discuss policy during these unprecedented times is to allow meetings to be convened online.

In the lead up to the 2021 State and National ALP Conferences, the NSW Labor Administrative Committee must ensure that all rank-and-file party members are given a voice. Indeed, if the peak decision-making body of our party, the National Conference, can be convened online, then there is no reason that all party units should not also be allowed to.

I call on you to support party democracy by ensuring that a rules change allowing party units to hold meetings wholly electronically via Zoom or a similar medium is discussed at the meeting of the NSW Labor Organising Recruitment and Training Sub-Committee on Thursday 14 January.
